Hey everyone . . . Well I’m over the border, and I’m in Mexico. I’m happy to finally say that I’m here.
Now . . . time to catch everyone up to speed:
On September 12th I arrived at training camp in Gainsville, Georgia (about an hour and a half away from Atlanta). At training camp I met the rest of the team, there are 13 of us total, 3 guys and 10 girls. Camp was filled with a lot of different speakers and team building activities. I was in Georgia for a week total, and on Wednsday, September 19 my team and I left to catch a plane to Brownsville, Texas. In Texas we were met by our leaders and we all piled into two vans and drove across the border into Metemoros, Mexico. The first few days we were mostly busy with unpacking and moving into our new home for the next nine months- castillo Del Ray, a church in Colonia Libertad. The 10 of us girls share two rooms with three bunk beds to each room.
Once we were all settled in we spent our first Friday and Saturday finding our way around the city. Our leaders split us up into two groups, and we went on two different “Cultural Dips”. On Friday, we were dropped off at a different colonia and we had to find our way to plaza fiesta. After we were at the plaza we had to go to the market. We had to use the city public transportation in order to get from one location to another. It was a long day, but not compared to Saturday. On Saturday we had to travel to the border and cross. We ended up waiting in line for almost two hours to cross over into the States! This was due to the fact that it was a Saturday and we picked the busiest bridge to cross.
I learned a lot from these outings, and I am becoming more familiar with the city (I know now what to say so the driver will let me off the bus.)
